José Ataúlfo Morales Gordillo (Comitán, Mexico, March 28, 1907-Tapachula, January 5, 1981) was a silversmith and jeweler from Chiapas, owner of the "El Zafiro" jewelry store located in Tapachula. He is most recognized for naming the Ataúlfo mango, the most popular mango variety in Mexico. The confusion that he was the farmer or agronomist who developed the variety is common, however he was only the owner of the property where the first five trees of the Ataúlfa breed were found. He bought the land in 1949, when the mangueros were approximately five years old.
