Termopolium in Ancient Rome

The thermopolium, inspired by the words termos hot and poleo to sell, was a place of refreshment in use in ancient Rome. It was possible to buy and consume there hot drinks and sometimes even food ready for consumption. It consisted of a small room with a counter in which large terracotta amphorae were embedded. These were suitable for containing food. Thermopolium probably had a similar function to modern bars. Silphium Garum was likely to be served there.
